Identify Standards: Identify which of the South Carolina standards are to be addressed, identifying which of the standards will be targeted (taught and addressed), reviewed, and introduced in the module.

Develop Focus Questions: These essential questions are based on the knowledge and skills identified in the standards and are used by the teacher to formulate the culminating assessment and activities for the module.  These questions should identify in student language the essential learning expected at the end of the module and should engage them in finding the answers.

Plan Culminating Assessment: This is a summative assessment administered at the end of an instructional module.  It provides "evidence of understanding" by measuring whether the student can apply the knowledge and skills in the standards.  This assessment is typically a performance evaluation.

Teaching Activities / Strategies: Teaching activities are the strategies used by the teacher to convey the knowledge and skills to the students.  Activities should be selected and sequenced as appropriate for the students and the content area.

Student Activities: Student activities describe what the student is expected to do in order to learn, practice and apply the knowledge and skills in the targeted standards.  Activities should include strategies to motivate as well as to extend and refine learning of individual students.

Assessments: Assessment activities provide evidence of learning.  They describe whether students have met the standards taught in the activities.  Not all activities should be assessed (e.g., discovery activities).
