Arts Connection

A grant awarded by the S.C. Department of Education to Delmae Elementary School funded an artist-in-residency experience for third graders.  In March 2004, the students participated in activities which integrated visual art with language arts.  Patz Fowle, a Hartsville clay artist and teacher, guided the Delmae students in  clay-building skills.  Then students applied art vocabulary to writing assignments.

Our second grade students at Delmae had the opportunity to learn about music of the Caribbean.  Mrs. Kimberly Roberts presented a program called "Adventures in Rhythm" where our students explored making music and rhythms using everyday objects such as cans and sticks.  This program allowed every student to have hands-on performing experience and practice in writing their own rhythm patterns.  The week ended with a performance from the Pantasia Steel Band performing steel drums and other instruments.  The experience was very rewarding for our students at Delmae.
