Artist Residency coming to North Vista Elementary School

African American artist Carl Crawford will work with fifth grade students at North Vista elementary School in Florence SC during the week of November 10-13, 2008 from 8:20 until 1:45 p.m. daily. Crawford and North Vista art students will create a class collage that will be matted and framed and then displayed in the halls of the school.

The artist, Carl Crawford, specializes in a unique collage style using assembled pieces of magazine paper. He is from Columbia SC. His early influences were Jacob Lawrence, Romare Bearden and Ernie Barnes. A self-taught free-lance artist, he also studied under Larry Lebby, an internationally known artist also from Columbia, SC. Drawing his subject matter from the rich heritage of his neighborhood, he desires for his slice-of-life works to touch a memory in people. From scenes showing his grandmother cutting collard greens to children playing in the park, his attention to detail has made his works collector’s items. His work has been exhibited throughout the southeast United States and has won numerous awards. Visit his website at: http://www.cmcfinearts.net/main.html.

This project was made possible thanks to a grant from the South Carolina Arts Commission
